Which Spratts comb should I choose?
Compare the standard grades
These models are 6.5 inches long overall, approximately 16.5cm. The number of teeth per inch describes tooth density: a lower figure gives a more open pattern, while a higher figure means closer teeth. It is not the total tooth count or the length of the teeth.
| Grade | Teeth per inch | Chrome / Teflon |
|---|---|---|
| Extra coarse | 6 | Spratts 69 / 69B |
| Coarse | 9 | Spratts 70 / 70B |
| Medium | 13 | Spratts 71 / 71B |
| Fine | 17 | Spratts 72 / 72B |
| Extra fine | 23 | Spratts 73 / 73B |
The B models have a black Teflon coating and the same listed tooth densities as their chrome counterparts. Select the spacing for the coat first, then choose your preferred finish.
Long pins, moulting and broad-back combs
Tooth length and comb format matter as well as spacing. A long-pin comb helps reach deeper coat; staggered teeth suit a different task from an even row. Broad-back and combination models offer further choices of grip, length and tooth pattern.
| Model | Overall length | Design and tooth density |
|---|---|---|
| Spratts 66 | 6.5 inches | Long pins; extra coarse, 6 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 67 | 6.5 inches | Staggered teeth for moulting long-haired coats; 9 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 74 | 7 inches | Heavyweight broad back; coarse, 7 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 75 | 7 inches | Heavyweight broad back; medium, 10 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 76 | 4 inches | Compact broad back; extra fine, 22 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 77 | 2.75 inches | Miniature nit comb; 29 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 79 | 7 inches | Heavyweight broad back; coarse/medium, 7 and 10 teeth per inch |
| Spratts 80 | 6 inches | Combination; medium/fine, 11 and 15 teeth per inch |
Match the comb to the coat
Start with a spacing that passes comfortably through the section you are grooming. Use a finer comb only after tangles have been addressed. If a comb catches, pause rather than pulling it through; even a wide-toothed comb should not be forced through a tight mat.
The Spratts 73 is a classic choice for fine spaniel coat finishing, but coat texture, density and condition matter more than the breed name alone. For a smaller fine tool, compare the Spratts 76. Neither a fine comb nor a coating makes one model suitable for every coat.
Looking after your comb
Remove collected hair, wipe the comb clean and dry it before storing. Clean coated models gently without abrasive scourers. Check for bent teeth, rough points or damaged surfaces before use.
