Which blades will fit?

There are three blade systems, and a blade only fits clippers in its own system.

  • A5 SnapOn (detachable): the most common. Andis, Oster A5, Wahl Competition, Aesculap SnapOn and Heiniger blades all fit any A5 clipper, including the Andis Pulse, Aesculap Fav 5 and Durati, Heiniger Saphir and Opal, and Wahl KM10. Shop A5 blades.
  • Aesculap Favorita: Aesculap's own fitting, used on the Favorita 2, Speed, CL and CLi. A5 blades won't fit these, and Favorita blades won't fit A5 clippers. Shop Favorita blades.
  • Adjustable or model-specific heads: trimmers and compact clippers such as the Aesculap Akkurata and Exacta, the Heiniger Style Mini and Midi, and the Wahl Arco take only their own replacement head.

Choosing a dog grooming clipper

Corded or cordless? Cordless clippers let you move freely around the dog, which suits mobile grooming and nervous dogs. Look for two batteries if you groom all day. Corded clippers never run flat and suit long salon days at a fixed table.

Interchangeable or adjustable blades? Clippers that take A5 blades give you the widest choice of cutting lengths from every major brand, and blades can be sharpened or replaced one at a time. Adjustable-blade clippers change length with a lever, which is simpler for home grooming but limits your options.

What to buy first. Most A5 clippers come with a No. 10 blade (about 1.5mm). Add a 7F (3.2mm) or 5F (6.3mm) for body work, plus clipper oil and a cooling spray to keep blades running cool.

Frequently asked questions

Which blades will fit my clipper?

Check which of the three blade systems your clipper uses (see above). If it takes A5 blades, you can mix brands freely. If you're unsure, contact us with the model name and we'll tell you.

Corded or cordless?

Cordless gives you freedom to move around the dog, which suits mobile grooming and nervous dogs. Corded clippers never run flat, which suits long salon days at a fixed table.

What do blade numbers mean?

The higher the number, the shorter the cut. A No. 10 leaves about 1.5mm, a 7F about 3.2mm and a 4F about 9.5mm. A No. 40 leaves just 0.25mm.

What's the difference between skip-tooth and full-tooth blades?

The "F" means full-tooth, for a smooth finishing pass. Skip-tooth blades (no F) have wider-spaced teeth for working through thicker coats, and suit experienced groomers.

Which blade comes with a new clipper?

Most A5 clippers come with a No. 10, a short cut of about 1.5mm. For more length, add a longer blade or attachment combs.

Can I use attachment combs?

Yes, on most clippers, but check which base blade the comb maker specifies. A comb that fits the clipper won't necessarily fit every blade.

How long do cordless batteries last?

It ranges from about 60 minutes (Aesculap Fav 5 CL) to up to four hours (Aesculap Durati, Heiniger Opal), depending on the coat and blade. Most of our cordless clippers come with two batteries.

How do I stop my blade getting hot?

Oil it regularly, use a cooling spray, and check its temperature often as you work. Swapping to a second blade lets the first one cool.

Do you sell spares and repair clippers?

Yes. We stock spares for Andis, Heiniger, Aesculap, Wahl and Oster clippers, and our workshop repairs them. Contact us about a repair.

How fast is delivery?

Orders placed by 2pm are dispatched the same day by Royal Mail Tracked.
